Maa Tenu ceremony
Maa Tenu is a communal ceremony of the Pelauw village held every three years on the last Thursday and Friday of the Maulud in the Rabiulawal and Rabiul akhir month of Islamic calender. The climax of the ceremony is the Cakalele attraction, where the participants even all of the Pelauw villagers becoming invulnerable and cut one another without leaving any wound. There are also some other cultural attractions in between the actions to welcome the visitors. In July 2003, the event of the Maa Tenu ceremony will take place on 17 and 18.
There are also the ruins of an old Dutch fortress in Pelauw, built byA.de Vlaming Van Oudshoorn in 1656. It could be reached by public transportation or chartered mini-buses from Pelauw or from Waeriang beach.
Ouw's Potteries
Ouw is the only village on Saparua island, lies 9 km away from Saparua town, where the villagers are well-known as pottery makers. The skill is passed on from one generation to the next. It is interesting to watch them processing the potteries from raw materials until various household items in their workshop. Their final products are modified and developed with artistic finishing and according to the style chosen by the visitors for souvenirs. Close to Ouw's village entrance from Saparua, there are the ruins of a fortress which is usually called benteng Ouw (Ouw's fortress). There is also a cave near Ouw.a half km away from Ouw, which could be reached by car and then app. 200 meter walking. There is a small creek in the middle of the cave used by the villagers for drinking, bathing and washing. At low tide, the creek could be traced until the coastline.
