Fort Duuistede

A huge 600 m2 fort on a coral hill, built in 1676 by the Governor of Amboina, Arnold de Vlaming van Oudshoorn. In 1691 the fort was renovated by Nicholas Schaghen. It was oval -shaped built, with the outer walls of 4,5 mtrs high and 1 mtr thick. There are still the remains of five 1,5 mtrs cannonades . It is easy to see the panoramic view of the Waisisil beach from the fort, Booi cape and the south east peninsula. It is only some 500 meters away from the Saparua's town terminal.
Fort Duurstede was conquered by Thomas Matulessy / Pattimura one of Indonesian National heroes from Maluku and the Lease communities during the early morning attack on May 16 th 1817. During the attack all the Dutch soldier were killed together with Resident Van Den Berg, except his son" Gilbert" who was left alive. He was named by Pattimura " Gilbert Van Den Berg Van Saparua" (his descendent are now in the Netherlands). There is a diorama in the museum of the Dutch colonial history in Maluku during the Pattimura war, in front of the fort. Next to the building there is a ten meters deep well, called Perigi Maut (well of the death) where many of Dutch soldiers reached their hour of death during the conflict. It needs only five minutes walking to reach the fort from Saparua's town terminal.

 

Mini Museum

The residence of the Matulessy family becomes a mini museum in Haria village now. It lies five kms from Saparua town or 500 meters from the terminal, in front of the Petra-Haria Church. The relics of Pattimura belongings such as his short, belt, head-cover, and many others are displayed here. This museum could be reached using a minibus from Haria harbour or from Saparua terminal.

 

Sila's Fortress Remnant and Old Church

Fort Beverwijk is a Dutch relic in Sila which was built in 1654 by Admiral Ver-hoeven. The fort it self was 50 mtr X 50 mtr. The relic left there is only a 10 X 8m2 wall, 1,5 mtr thick. There are still left 2 old cannonades. From the fort one could have a panoramic view to Saparua's capes of Ouw and Itawaka, Seram's Koako cape, Nusalaut's Ameth cape and Sila beach. Next to fort Beverwijk, there is an old church which was built in 1719, precisely during the rule of Sila's king" Djouw Lois Pati Sila". The last renovated structure was in 1991 without altering the original structure.

 

Waisisil Beach

It is a historic beach during the Pattimura war in the village of Tiouw, app. one km from Saparua town. The beach is full of coral reef, and has a fresh water well used by the local people for bathing and traditional washing. On the road side, there is a memorial to commemorate the struggle of Pattimura and app. 200 mtrs from it, a memorial - shaped tomb of de Haas, a former Dutch Resident who was killed in the action on the beach together with the other soldiers in 181/.Waisisil beach could be reached using the minibus from Saparua to Booi, or 25 minutes walking from the Saparua terminal.
